Steuben County

Bicentennial Celebrations Scheduled

by

Bill Treichler

The 200th anniversary of the establishment of Steuben County in March of 1796, will be commemorated the evening of March 16 with a Bicentennial Ball from 8:00 p.m. until midnight in the Curtiss Museum on Route 54 near Hammondsport. There will be music for dancing by the Southern Tier All Star Jazz Band, an hors d'oeuvre buffet catered by the Tally-Ho Restaurant, and there will be exhibits of historic and contemporary paintings, and student art, from Steuben County. Ball celebrants are invited but not required to come dressed in historic costumes. Tickets for couples are $25, and for singles, $15.

Spring and summer bicentennial activities are planned. The ark is already scheduled for 12 local festivals. The ark is also being prepared to attempt the 350 mile trip to the Chesapeake Bay sometime when water is high in the Conhocton River this spring. Crew members are already signing on for the 7 to 9 day trip.

On the weekend of September 7 and 8 an Olde Tyme Country Fair, reminiscent of the early fairs in Bath, will run from noon until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, and from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Agricultural Society Fairgrounds in Bath.
